Alaska Wilderness, NOT Alaska Warming
A Petition To: 2008 presidential candidates
Petition Background: Alaska’s wild lands have faced industrial threats for decades. Now there is a new threat, one that is already changing the land and harming its inhabitants: global warming. Alaska is feeling the effects of global warming at a disproportionately high rate. Permafrost is melting, polar bears are threatened by shrinking sea ice, and trees in Alaska’s rainforests are dying from dramatic shifts in the climate.
We cannot let industrial development in Alaska’s wildest areas further exacerbate an already alarming problem. We must send a message that we are ready for a responsible energy policy that confronts global warming. This starts with the stewardship of our land.

To show a commitment to a clean energy future, healthy wildlife populations, and the integrity of our wild public lands, we must protect areas like the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, Teshekpuk Lake, the Beaufort and Chukchi Seas, and the Tongass National Forest.

Call to Action: We, the undersigned, urge you to publicly commit to permanently protecting Alaska’s wild lands as Wilderness. As a presidential candidate, you have the opportunity to call attention to the values of these lands and the need to issue protections as a step towards a clean energy future.

We will not contact you for any reason unless you provide your email address. Fields marked with a red asterisk are required.
