Alaska Natives and the Reserve
Fossils Native Alaskan peoples have relied on the lands of the Reserve for their livelihood for thousands of years. Barrow, located on a small peninsula just outside the Reserve at the northern-most point of the United States, is one of the oldest inhabited sites in the United States, having been occupied for at least 4,500 years. Native Inupiat Eskimo in the villages located throughout the Reserve rely on caribou, waterfowl, seal, bear, fish, and many other species for their survival. Native communities outside the area also rely on wildlife and bird species that migrate through the Reserve.
