We’re so excited you’re coming to Wilderness Week this March! These materials will provide you with background information on the issues we will be discussing with members of Congress and their staff during the week. They are intended to help you learn a little more about the public lands and waters we are working to protect. Please do not feel the need to memorize them or become an expert on the issues.

The most important thing is for you to come to tell your personal story about why you think it’s important to protect these places. There will be a staff person along with you at your meetings to answer any tough questions your team might get. In addition, having to follow up with the answer to a question is a great way to build a relationship with a congressional office.

Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (click for general information):
A Brief History of the Arctic Refuge
HR 239- the Udall-Eisenhower Arctic Wilderness Act: This legislation calling on Congress to protect the Coastal Plain of the Arctic Refuge as Wilderness has been introduced in the House of Representatives for the last 30 years. We are waiting for the current bill number (which we will have before you arrive in Washington, DC) but the language of the bill will be exactly the same. The Senate versions utilize the same language as well.
