National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska Campaign

National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska (Reserve or NPR-A)
River in the NPR-AThe National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska is the largest single unit of public lands in the nation. It harbors rich and important wild lands and wildlife, important in their own right and to the Inupiat people of Alaska’s North Slope. While oil and gas activities have a place in the Reserve, a balanced approach to management of this area requires permanent protection of its special places and values, including of subsistence resources used by Alaska Native residents. Oil development that does occur must adhere to strict environmental standards, including those related to operations, cleanup and restoration. Currently, the Bush Administration has pulled out all the stops to drill the Reserve, disregarding advice from scientists, overwhelming public opposition, and historic protections for its special places.
